Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Break free from the struggle with difficult thoughts and emotions. Our evidence-based Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps you accept what you can’t control and commit to actions that align with your deepest values, creating meaningful change in your life.

Move Forward with Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

Many people spend years fighting against their own thoughts and feelings, believing that controlling their inner experiences is the key to happiness. What if the real problem isn’t the presence of difficult emotions, but the exhausting struggle against them? Acceptance & commitment therapy offers a different path forward, one that focuses not on eliminating distress but on changing your relationship with it. At Healing Speak Counseling, we provide specialized ACT therapy to help you develop psychological flexibility and live a life guided by your values rather than your fears. Our evidence-based approach has helped countless individuals break free from patterns of avoidance and move toward what truly matters to them.

Understanding Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

Acceptance & commitment therapy is a mindfulness based therapy that belongs to the third wave of cognitive behavioral approaches. Unlike traditional therapies that focus on reducing symptoms, ACT therapy helps you build psychological flexibility through six core processes: acceptance, cognitive defusion, being present, self-as-context, values clarification, and committed action. The foundation of this approach recognizes that psychological suffering often comes not from the presence of difficult thoughts and feelings, but from our attempts to avoid or control them. When you’re constantly fighting internal experiences, you may find yourself avoiding meaningful activities, withdrawing from relationships, or making choices based on fear rather than what you genuinely care about. Research consistently demonstrates that acceptance & commitment therapy effectively treats anxiety disorders, depression, chronic pain, trauma, substance use, and many other conditions. The approach works by helping you accept your internal experiences while committing to behavior changes that align with your personal values.

The Six Core Processes of ACT

Our therapists guide you through six interconnected processes that build psychological flexibility and create lasting change: Acceptance means actively embracing your thoughts and feelings rather than fighting against them. Instead of spending energy trying to suppress anxiety or push away sadness, you learn to make room for these experiences without letting them control your behavior. This doesn’t mean resignation or giving up, but rather choosing not to struggle with what you cannot directly control. Cognitive Defusion helps you change how you relate to your thoughts. Rather than treating thoughts as literal truths or commands you must obey, you learn to observe them as simply mental events. A thought like “I’m not good enough” becomes just a thought your mind produced, not a fact that determines your worth or actions. Being Present involves connecting fully with the here and now rather than getting lost in worries about the future or regrets about the past. Through mindfulness practices, you develop the ability to bring flexible, focused awareness to your current experience. Self-as-Context helps you recognize that you are not your thoughts, feelings, or experiences. You are the conscious being observing these experiences. This perspective provides a stable sense of self that transcends any particular thought or emotion. Values Clarification is about identifying what truly matters to you, what you want your life to stand for. Values based therapy helps you distinguish between goals (which can be achieved) and values (ongoing directions you choose to live by). When you’re clear about your values, you can make choices that bring meaning and vitality to your life. Committed Action involves setting goals guided by your values and taking effective action toward them. Even when difficult thoughts and feelings show up, you can still move in valued directions. This process is about developing patterns of behavior that serve your chosen life direction.

Who Benefits from ACT Therapy

Acceptance & commitment therapy helps people struggling with a wide range of challenges. You might benefit from this approach if you find yourself avoiding situations because of anxiety, feeling stuck in patterns of rumination, or making life choices based on fear rather than what matters to you. Our clients often come to us after years of trying to control or eliminate their symptoms without lasting success. They’ve tried traditional talk therapy, perhaps multiple times, and found that while they gained insights, their core struggles remained. ACT therapy offers something different by teaching you that you don’t need to win the war against your internal experiences to live a meaningful life. This approach is particularly effective for empaths and caregivers who often struggle with overwhelming emotions and difficulty setting boundaries. Healthcare professionals, therapists, teachers, and others in helping roles find that acceptance & commitment therapy gives them practical tools for managing compassion fatigue while staying connected to why they chose their profession.

What ACT Looks Like in Practice

During sessions, you’ll work with your therapist to identify patterns where experiential avoidance creates problems in your life. Perhaps you avoid social situations because of anxiety, or you’ve withdrawn from activities you once loved because they trigger painful memories. Together, you’ll explore the real costs of these avoidance strategies. Your therapist will introduce experiential exercises and metaphors that make abstract concepts concrete and personal. You might practice mindfulness exercises to develop present-moment awareness, or use defusion techniques to change your relationship with troubling thoughts. These aren’t just intellectual exercises but practical skills you can use in daily life. Values work forms a central part of treatment. You’ll explore questions like: What do you want your life to be about? What kind of person do you want to be? What relationships and activities bring you vitality and meaning? Once your values become clear, you’ll develop specific, actionable goals that move you in those valued directions. The beautiful paradox of acceptance & commitment therapy is that by giving up the struggle to control your internal experiences, you often find that distressing symptoms naturally diminish. When anxiety no longer controls your choices, when you can have the thought “I might fail” and still take meaningful action, you discover a new kind of freedom.

ACT for Specific Conditions

Research demonstrates that mindfulness based therapy approaches like ACT effectively treat numerous mental health conditions. For anxiety disorders, rather than trying to eliminate anxious thoughts and feelings, you learn to pursue valued activities even while anxiety is present. This breaks the cycle where avoidance of anxiety leads to increasingly restricted life choices. In treating depression, acceptance & commitment therapy helps you reconnect with activities and relationships that bring meaning, even when motivation is low. Instead of waiting to feel better before engaging with life, you learn that taking valued action can itself shift your emotional experience. For those recovering from trauma, ACT provides tools for relating to painful memories and emotions without being controlled by them. Combined with other trauma-focused approaches like EMDR, it helps you move from survival mode to living a life guided by your values rather than your fears. Individuals struggling with chronic pain find that while acceptance & commitment therapy may not eliminate physical sensations, it dramatically reduces the suffering and disability associated with pain. By accepting pain as part of your experience rather than your entire experience, you can pursue meaningful activities despite its presence.

Getting Started with ACT at Healing Speak

Beginning your journey with acceptance & commitment therapy starts with understanding where you are now and where you want to be. During your initial session, we’ll explore the ways experiential avoidance may be creating problems in your life and help you clarify what truly matters to you. You’ll learn practical skills you can immediately begin applying in your daily life. Between sessions, you’ll have opportunities to practice these skills and notice how small shifts in your relationship with internal experiences can create significant changes in your behavior and quality of life. Many clients find that values based therapy helps them reconnect with parts of themselves they thought were lost. When you stop struggling so hard against your internal experiences, energy becomes available for pursuits that genuinely matter to you. Relationships improve, creativity returns, and life feels more vital and meaningful. The goal isn’t to eliminate all discomfort or to feel happy all the time. Rather, acceptance & commitment therapy helps you build a rich, meaningful life even in the presence of the pain that comes with being human. You learn to hold both joy and sorrow, to move toward your values even when fear shows up, to be fully present for the life you’re actually living. If you’re tired of fighting against yourself, if you’re ready to stop letting difficult thoughts and feelings dictate your choices, ACT therapy may offer the path forward you’ve been seeking.
