Specialized Treatment for Personality Disorders
Your emotions feel overwhelming and intense. Relationships repeatedly follow painful patterns. Your sense of self shifts unpredictably. You might struggle with impulsive behaviors, chronic emptiness, or difficulty trusting others. These patterns have affected your life for years, and traditional therapy hasn’t created the lasting change you need. At Healing Speak, we provide specialized personality disorder treatment from a Certified Personality Disorder Treatment Provider who understands the complex nature of these conditions and knows how to help.
Our personality disorder therapy uses evidence-based techniques specifically designed to address the core issues underlying personality disorders, creating genuine transformation rather than just symptom management through comprehensive personality disorder counseling.
Understanding Personality Disorders
Personality disorders are enduring patterns of inner experience and behavior that deviate significantly from cultural expectations. These patterns are pervasive, inflexible, begin in adolescence or early adulthood, and cause significant distress or impairment. Unlike mood or anxiety disorders that feel like something you have, personality disorders affect how you fundamentally experience yourself, others, and the world.
Common personality disorders include Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), characterized by emotional instability, fear of abandonment, and identity disturbance; Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), involving grandiosity and need for admiration; Avoidant Personality Disorder, marked by social inhibition and feelings of inadequacy; Dependent Personality Disorder, characterized by excessive need for care; Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder, involving preoccupation with orderliness and control; and others. Our treatment for personality disorders addresses all types with specialized expertise and evidence-based interventions.
How Personality Disorders Develop
Personality disorders typically develop from a combination of genetic vulnerability, childhood experiences, trauma, and environmental factors. Many people with personality disorders experienced invalidating environments, abuse, neglect, or unstable attachment relationships during formative years. Understanding these origins is an important part of personality disorder therapy, helping you develop compassion for yourself while working toward change through specialized personality disorder counseling.
Common Challenges and Symptoms
While each personality disorder has specific diagnostic criteria, people seeking personality disorder treatment often share certain challenges that significantly impact their quality of life and relationships.
Intense and Unstable Emotions
You might experience emotions that feel overwhelming, shift rapidly, and are difficult to regulate. Small triggers can lead to intense reactions that others don’t understand. You might feel like you’re at the mercy of your emotions rather than in control of them. Our borderline personality disorder therapy and treatment for personality disorders includes extensive work on emotion regulation skills that help you experience feelings without being overwhelmed by them.
Relationship Difficulties
Relationships often follow painful, repetitive patterns. You might idealize people initially then feel devastated when they disappoint you. You might fear abandonment intensely or push people away before they can leave you. Trust feels impossible, and conflicts escalate quickly. This personality disorder counseling addresses relationship patterns directly, helping you develop healthier ways of connecting with others that don’t repeat painful cycles.
Identity and Self-Image Issues
Your sense of who you are might feel unstable or unclear. You might adopt different identities in different contexts or feel empty and undefined. Your self-image might shift dramatically based on others’ perceptions or recent experiences. Our personality disorder therapy helps you develop a more stable, authentic sense of self that isn’t entirely dependent on external validation or relationship status.
Impulsive and Self-Destructive Behaviors
You might engage in impulsive behaviors that provide temporary relief but create long-term problems. These might include substance use, reckless spending, unsafe sexual behavior, binge eating, or self-harm. Our treatment for personality disorders addresses these behaviors while helping you understand their function and develop healthier coping mechanisms through evidence-based personality disorder counseling.
Evidence-Based Treatment Approaches
Healing Speak uses proven therapeutic techniques specifically effective for personality disorder treatment. Our founder is a Certified Personality Disorder Treatment Provider with specialized training and 11 years of clinical experience treating complex cases that other therapists find difficult.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
DBT is the gold-standard treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder and is highly effective for other personality disorders as well. Our Certified DBT provider teaches four core skill modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. This borderline personality disorder therapy provides concrete tools for managing intense emotions, tolerating distress without impulsive reactions, and navigating relationships more effectively. DBT is a cornerstone of our comprehensive personality disorder counseling approach.
Schema Therapy
Schema Therapy is specifically designed for personality disorders and addresses the deep-rooted patterns (schemas) that developed from early experiences. You’ll identify maladaptive schemas like abandonment, mistrust, defectiveness, or failure, understand where they came from, and gradually develop healthier schemas through limited reparenting and experiential techniques. This personality disorder treatment helps heal wounds at their source rather than just managing surface symptoms.
Mentalization-Based Therapy
Mentalization is the capacity to understand mental states in yourself and others. Many people with personality disorders struggle with mentalization, particularly during emotional distress. This treatment for personality disorders helps you develop the ability to reflect on your own thoughts and feelings, understand others’ perspectives, and make sense of behaviors in terms of underlying mental states. Improved mentalization reduces interpersonal conflicts and emotional dysregulation.
Transference-Focused Psychotherapy
TFP examines the patterns that emerge in the therapeutic relationship as windows into your broader relationship patterns. By exploring how you experience and relate to your therapist, you gain insight into the dynamics you recreate in other relationships. This personality disorder therapy approach is particularly effective for understanding and changing deeply ingrained relational patterns through intensive personality disorder counseling work.
EMDR and Trauma Processing
Many personality disorders have roots in trauma and adverse childhood experiences. EMDR helps process these traumatic memories, reducing their emotional intensity and the maladaptive beliefs they created. When trauma underlies personality disorder symptoms, processing these experiences is essential for lasting change. Our borderline personality disorder therapy and broader treatment for personality disorders incorporates trauma processing when clinically indicated.
What Makes Our Approach Different
Our founder is a Certified Personality Disorder Treatment Provider, which represents specialized training beyond basic licensure. This expertise matters because personality disorders are complex conditions that require specialized knowledge and techniques. Many therapists lack adequate training in personality disorder treatment and may inadvertently use approaches that aren’t effective or could be harmful for these specific conditions.
Unlike therapists who simply let you talk about your struggles without structure, our personality disorder counseling is evidence-based and focused on creating measurable change. We use proven techniques like DBT, Schema Therapy, and mentalization-based approaches that are specifically designed for treatment for personality disorders. We’re also efficient and solution-focused—if we can help you make progress, we work toward that actively rather than drawing out therapy unnecessarily.
Understanding the Complexity
We understand that people with personality disorders often feel misunderstood, judged, or blamed for their symptoms by healthcare providers. Our personality disorder therapy approaches you with genuine compassion while maintaining appropriate boundaries. We recognize that your patterns developed for reasons and served protective functions, even if they now cause problems. This understanding informs our compassionate yet effective approach to borderline personality disorder therapy and treatment for all personality disorders.
Who We Help
We specialize in working with adults diagnosed with or showing signs of personality disorders who are ready to engage in the intensive work required for genuine change. Many of our clients are helping professionals themselves—nurses, therapists, teachers, counselors—who struggle with personality disorder symptoms despite their ability to support others professionally. You might have tried therapy before without success, or you might be seeking treatment for personality disorders for the first time after years of struggling.
Our clients seeking personality disorder counseling value evidence-based approaches and want therapists with specialized expertise in personality disorders, not just general therapy skills. They’re ready to commit to the process of change, even when it’s difficult or uncomfortable, through structured personality disorder treatment.
The Treatment Process
Personality disorder therapy is typically longer-term than treatment for other conditions because we’re addressing deeply rooted patterns rather than acute symptoms. However, we’re still efficient and focused on measurable progress. You’ll learn concrete skills, practice new behaviors, process underlying trauma, and gradually develop healthier patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating to others through comprehensive treatment for personality disorders.
Our borderline personality disorder therapy and broader personality disorder counseling includes regular assessment of progress, skill-building homework between sessions, and collaborative goal-setting. We celebrate incremental improvements while continuing to work toward larger transformations in your life and relationships.
Building a Life Worth Living
The goal of personality disorder treatment isn’t just symptom reduction. It’s building what DBT founder Marsha Linehan calls “a life worth living”—a life aligned with your values, including satisfying relationships, emotional stability, and authentic self-expression. Our treatment for personality disorders helps you envision and create this life while developing the skills needed to maintain it through ongoing personality disorder counseling support.
Convenient Telehealth Services
We provide personality disorder therapy through secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platforms accessible anywhere in the state. Consistent attendance is crucial for effective treatment for personality disorders, and telehealth removes barriers like transportation challenges or geographic distance. We offer flexible scheduling including weekend and evening appointments for personality disorder counseling, understanding the importance of regular, consistent sessions.
Accessible and Insurance-Friendly
Specialized borderline personality disorder therapy and treatment for personality disorders should be accessible to everyone who needs it. We’re in-network with over 10 major insurance providers including Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Florida Blue. We also offer self-pay options for personality disorder treatment and can discuss sliding scale fees in certain situations to ensure financial concerns don’t prevent you from receiving the specialized personality disorder counseling you deserve.
Begin Your Journey Toward Change
You don’t have to continue living with patterns that cause you and others pain. Personality disorders are treatable conditions, and with specialized personality disorder treatment from a Certified provider, you can develop healthier ways of experiencing yourself, managing emotions, and relating to others. Change is possible, and you deserve expert care that understands the complexity of what you’re experiencing.
